The square footage on the box is not a specification
The pint rating is measured under a federal test procedure. The coverage figure next to it is written by a copywriter, and in our own registry it varies by 1.9x across units with identical certified capacity.

The short answer
A dehumidifier's square-footage claim is a marketing figure with no test procedure behind it. In our registry, five units with the same certified 50-pint capacity claim coverage from 4,000 to 7,500 square feet. Size from the room's measured humidity and the DOE pint rating instead.

Every one of these removes the same amount of water under the same federal test. The coverage claim varies by a factor of 1.9. Figures read from each manufacturer's own listing, 2026-09-01.
If coverage were a measured property of the machine, those numbers would cluster. They do not, because there is no test behind them - no temperature, no humidity, no ceiling height, no air-change rate, no target the room has to reach, and no time limit for reaching it.
Why the number cannot mean anything precise
Ask what a coverage claim would have to specify in order to be checkable, and the problem becomes obvious. All of these change the answer, and none of them appears on any box:
- Ceiling height. Dehumidifiers dry air by volume, not by floor area. The same 1,000 square feet is 8,000 cubic feet with an 8-foot ceiling and 12,000 with a 12-foot one.
- How damp the space is. Pulling a room from 80% to 50% is a completely different job from holding it at 50%, and a claim that does not say which is describing neither.
- Temperature. Capacity is rated at 65F. The same machine in a 55F crawl space does substantially less. Why.
- Air exchange. A sealed basement and one with an open window are not the same room, and the second one is effectively infinite.
- How long you will wait. Any machine dries any room eventually, if nothing else changes. Without a time limit the claim is unfalsifiable.
- What target counts as done. 60%? 50%? 45%? The last few points cost disproportionately.

What the pint rating is, by contrast
The pint rating IS a specification. Since June 2019 it has meant: water removed in 24 hours at 65F and 60% relative humidity, under the US Department of Energy's test procedure. Every certified unit is measured the same way, which is exactly what makes cross-brand comparison possible.
That is also why the certified list is worth more than any listing copy. A model in the ENERGY STAR data has a capacity and an efficiency figure somebody verified; a coverage claim has an author. The pint rating explained.
What to use instead
- 1Measure the room's relative humidity for a week. A hygrometer costs about ten dollars and it is the only input that reflects your actual room. One reading tells you nothing; a week tells you the range.
- 2Note the temperature at the same time. Below about 60F you are choosing a technology, not a capacity.
- 3Look for liquid water, not just humid air. Damp to the touch, a white bloom on block, staining - that is a water-ingress problem a dehumidifier manages rather than solves.
- 4Then pick a DOE pint class from the measured humidity and the floor area together. The sizing method, or the capacity chart if you want it as one table.
The other two numbers on the box
Coverage is not the only figure worth distrusting. A full reading of a dehumidifier listing means separating three different numbers:
