How a dehumidifier actually works
Worth ten minutes, because the mechanism explains almost every complaint people have about these machines - including why the DOE test temperature changed the numbers on the box.

The short answer
A compressor dehumidifier is a small refrigerator with no insulated box. It chills a coil below the air's dew point so water condenses out, drips into a tray, and the now-dry air passes over a warm coil on the way out. The room ends up drier and slightly warmer.

The cycle, in four steps
- 1A fan pulls room air in across a filter and onto a cold evaporator coil.
- 2The coil is below the air's dew point, so water vapor condenses on it, exactly as it does on a cold drink in summer. The water runs down the fins into a tray.
- 3The now-dry, chilled air passes over the condenser coil, which is hot because it is dumping the heat the evaporator absorbed, plus the work the compressor put in.
- 4The air leaves warmer and drier than it arrived. Not by much - a few degrees - but it is a net heat gain to the room, which is why a dehumidifier is a poor thing to run in a hot room and a mildly useful one in a cool basement.
Why the room gets warmer, and by how much
Energy is conserved. All 488 watts a 50-pint unit draws end up as heat in the room, minus a small amount carried away in the drained water. On top of that, condensing water releases the latent heat it absorbed when it evaporated in the first place.
So a dehumidifier is, thermally, a 500-watt space heater that happens to also dry the air. In a basement that is 65F and clammy, that is comfortable. Why the test temperature changed the rating
This is the connection between this page and the pint rating, and it is the reason this explainer lives in the sizing hub rather than a general guides bucket.
Warm air holds far more water vapor than cool air. At 80F and 60% relative humidity there is substantially more water in a cubic meter of air than at 65F and 60% - the percentage is the same but the absolute quantity is not, because the capacity of the air has changed. A dehumidifier can only remove water that is there.
So moving the test from 80F to 65F did not make machines worse. It measured them against less available water, and the reported capacity fell about 25 to 30 percent as a result. The hardware, the compressor and the coil are unchanged. Only the question being asked changed.
Why it ices, and why it stops in the cold
The evaporator has to be below the dew point to condense anything. As the room cools, the dew point falls, so the coil has to run colder. Eventually the coil goes below freezing, and instead of running down the fins the condensate freezes onto them.
Ice on the fins blocks airflow, which makes the coil colder still, which makes more ice. That is a runaway, and it is why every decent unit has an auto-defrost cycle: it stops the compressor and runs the fan until the ice melts. Below about 41F the machine ends up spending more time defrosting than dehumidifying, and its useful output collapses.
What this explains about your machine
- It collects less than its rating - the room is cooler or drier than 65F and 60%. Correct behavior.
- It ices up in a cold room - the coil is below freezing. Expected, and the defrost cycle is handling it.
- It ices up in a warm room - airflow is restricted, almost always a dirty filter. Cleaning and maintenance.
- It warms the room - by design, and unavoidable.
- It gets very little water once the room is dry - success, not failure. There is no more water to take.
- It runs constantly and never reaches target - undersized, or water is entering the space faster than it can be removed.
