The best dehumidifiers for a basement
Ranked on drainage before capacity, because the machine that cannot reach your drain is the wrong machine at any pint rating.

The short answer
For most US basements: a 50-pint DOE-rated compressor unit with continuous drainage, drawing around 488 W. If the drain is below the machine, gravity is enough and the cheapest unit wins. If it is above, you need a built-in pump, and that single fact eliminates about half the market.
Start with the drain, not the pint number
Every basement dehumidifier roundup you will read opens with capacity. That is the wrong order. Capacity is a spectrum - a 50-pint unit in a room that needed 30 works fine, it just idles more. Drainage is binary. A machine with no pump cannot move water uphill, and there is no setting, no accessory and no technique that changes that.
So go and look first. Stand where the unit will live and find the nearest place water can go: a floor drain, a sump pit, a laundry standpipe, a utility sink, a window well. Then note whether it is above or below the machine's drain port, which sits a few inches off the floor on most portables.
- Below the port, within hose reach - you need nothing but a hose. Buy the cheapest 50-pint unit with a threaded outlet and spend the difference on nothing.
- Above the port - you need a built-in condensate pump. This is most finished basements and nearly every crawl space.
- No drain at all in the room - a pump plus a run to a sink, a stack or out through a rim joist. Or an external condensate pump, which is a separate purchase and a separate failure point.
Then the capacity, and what the number means
In June 2019 the US Department of Energy changed the dehumidifier test procedure. Units are now tested at 65F rather than 80F, because a basement in July is nearer 65F than 80F and the old figure flattered every machine on the market. Cooler air holds less water, so the same hardware now reports a smaller number. ENERGY STAR's published correlation maps an old 70-pint rating to 40 to 45 pints new, and an old 90 to 55.
This is why a 2018 buying guide recommending a 70-pint unit and a 2026 one recommending a 50-pint unit are giving the same advice. It is also why some listings still lead with a saturation figure measured at 95F and 90% RH, which is a hot tropical condition a US basement essentially never reaches. The only unit here that solves the real basement problem, which is not capacity but where the water goes when you are not standing next to it.

What is good
- The body separates, so the tank half can sit lower than the compressor half and the hose gets a genuine downhill run
- Certified at 49.67 pt/day, which is a real 50-pint machine rather than a saturation number
- IEF 2.01 L/kWh puts it exactly on the median for the 50-pint class - neither a bargain nor a penalty
- Wi-Fi that tells you it has stopped, which is the only smart feature that matters in a basement
What is not
- No pump, so the drain has to run downhill the whole way
- Midea publishes no wattage anywhere, so the 487 W above is computed rather than quoted

Someone with a floor drain, a sump, or a window well lower than the machine, who wants to set it once and stop thinking about it.
Skip it if
Skip it if the only drain in the room is higher than the unit. Without a pump, gravity is the entire drainage system, and no setting fixes an uphill hose.

Midea Cube 50 Pint Dehumidifier with Pump
Best for: A basement whose only drain is upstairs

Same machine as the Cube above with a condensate pump added, which is the difference between a hose you can run and a hose you cannot.

The current retail revision is the -B; every Midea 50-pint Cube revision in the certified list, pump or not, computes to 487-490 W, so the pump does not move the number meaningfully. The pump itself only runs in bursts.

- Pump means the destination can be higher than the machine - a laundry sink, a window, a stack
- Identical DOE capacity and IEF to the non-pump Cube, so the pump costs you nothing in efficiency
- The split body still works, so you can also run it on gravity and keep the pump as the backup

What is not
- Costs more than the identical machine without the pump
- A pump is one more thing that can fail, and when it does the unit stops rather than overflows

Who it is for
Anyone whose drain is above the floor. That is most finished basements and nearly every crawl space.
Skip it if
Skip it if you already have a floor drain within hose reach and below the machine. You would be paying for a pump you will never switch on.

The rare unit in this category whose listing states a wattage at all, which is why it is worth reading carefully rather than just buying.

The retail listing is the W1 suffix; the certified list carries Y1. Separately, Frigidaire's own listing copy states 115 V and 593 W. Those two numbers are not in conflict - 593 W is a nameplate maximum with the pump energized, and 490 W is the average draw at the DOE test condition. Use 490 W for running cost and 593 W for sizing a circuit.

Best for: The longest pump reach on the list

GE publishes what the pump can actually do - 16 feet of drain hose - and that number decides more purchases in this category than capacity does.

Skip it if the discharge point is more than 16 feet away. Extending a condensate pump's hose past its rated run is how you end up with a puddle and a warranty argument.

Frigidaire 50 Pint Portable Dehumidifier
Best for: The cheapest honest 50-pint machine

No pump, no app, no display theater - a compressor, a bucket and a threaded drain outlet, which is all a dry basement actually requires.

Not published by Frigidaire and not present by name in the ENERGY STAR certified list. The certified 50-pint class runs 443-490 W with a median of 488 W. Its current-generation non-pump sibling, the FHDD5033Y1, computes to 490 W, and Frigidaire's listing for the FHDD generation states 115 V / 545 W as a nameplate. Neither of those is this unit, so neither is printed as this unit's figure.
What is good
- Threaded outlet takes a standard garden hose, so the continuous drain needs no adapter
- Fewest failure points of any 50-pint unit here - no pump, no radio
- Auto shut-off and a removable bucket, which is the whole feature list and that is fine
- Usually the cheapest way into a real 50-pint DOE rating
What is not
- Gravity only. The drain must be below the machine, full stop
- No wattage published anywhere
- No timer, no app, no low-temperature claim
Who it is for
Anyone with a floor drain and no interest in features. This is the control group against which the pump models have to justify their price.
Skip it if
Skip it if the machine will sit on a finished floor with no drain below it. That is the one job it cannot do.
What these will cost you to run
Almost nobody publishes a dehumidifier's power draw. The inputs are public though: the ENERGY STAR certified product list gives every certified model's capacity at the DOE test condition and its Integrated Energy Factor in liters per kWh, and those two numbers give you the watts directly.

Across 164 certified 50-pint models the range is 443 to 490 W, so any 50-pint machine will land inside about ten percent of that figure. The bigger variable is your electricity rate - Nevada is 13.11 cents per kWh and Hawaii is 52.72, a four-fold spread on the same machine. Work out your own number.
One thing that matters more than any of this
A dehumidifier is not a waterproofing system. If the basement floor is wet after rain, if the walls are visibly damp at the base, or if there is efflorescence on the block, the water is coming in from outside and a machine that removes 50 pints a day is bailing rather than fixing. Gutters, grading and a working sump come first.
Where a dehumidifier earns its keep is the ordinary case: a basement that is structurally sound but sits at 65 to 75% relative humidity all summer because it is below grade and cool. The EPA advises keeping indoor relative humidity below 60 percent, ideally between 30 and 50. Getting from 70 to 50 is exactly what these machines do, and it is the difference between storage that survives and storage that smells.
What we would skip
Any thermoelectric mini unit, at any price
A Peltier mini removes about one pint a day. A basement machine removes fifty. They appear on the same search results page and the mini costs a tenth as much, which is why this is the single most common mis-purchase in the category. It is not a small dehumidifier; it is a different class of device.
A gravity-only unit when your only drain is above the floor
Half the units in any listing have no pump. If the destination is a laundry sink or a window, a gravity machine is a bucket you carry twice a day forever - and you will stop, and then the basement is damp again. Work out pump or gravity before you look at a single price.
How we picked
- Certified capacity at the post-2019 DOE test condition, not the saturation figure on the front of the box.
- Drainage options, ranked: pump beats gravity beats bucket, because it removes the constraint rather than working around it.
- Average power draw, computed from the ENERGY STAR certified list where a named entry exists, and stated as a class band where it does not.
- Whether the manufacturer publishes anything checkable at all. A maker that prints a wattage is telling you something about how it expects to be judged.
- We did not run any of these. No chamber, no meter, no shelf of returned boxes.
