The pint number on the box changed meaning in 2019
The US Department of Energy moved the test temperature from 80F to 65F. Capacity ratings fell by roughly a quarter overnight on machines that were physically identical. Almost nobody explains this, and it is the single most common reason people buy the wrong size.

The short answer
A dehumidifier's pint rating is the water it removes in 24 hours under a fixed laboratory condition. Since June 2019 that condition has been 65F and 60% relative humidity. Before, it was 80F. Cooler air holds less water, so the same machine now reports a smaller number.

Whole-home units lost proportionally less because they were already tested closer to their real operating condition.
That conversion table is published by ENERGY STAR, not by us. It is the official correlation between what a unit was called before 2020 and what the same class of hardware is called now. A 70-pint dehumidifier from 2018 and a 50-pint dehumidifier from 2024 are, broadly, the same machine.
Why the DOE moved the test
The old 80F test condition described a warm, humid living space. Most dehumidifiers do not live in one. They live in basements, and a basement in July is nearer 65F than 80F. ENERGY STAR's own wording is that the new procedure tests at 65F rather than 80F to more accurately reflect expected performance in a basement setting, and that the 15F reduction means a unit tested under the new procedure will report a smaller capacity.
So the new number is the more honest one. It is closer to what the machine will do in the room you are going to put it in. The problem is not the standard; the problem is that a decade of buying advice, retailer category pages, contractor rules of thumb and half the reviews on the internet are still calibrated to the old scale, and none of them say which scale they are using.
The third number, which is the one to distrust
There is a further figure in circulation that is not a DOE rating at all: capacity at saturation, usually quoted at 95F and 90% relative humidity. That is a hot, tropical, condensing-onto-everything condition that a US basement essentially never reaches. It produces a much larger number, and it is legal to print it.
One crawl space unit covered on this site, the AlorAir Sentinel HD55, is sold under a headline of 113 pints. Its ENERGY STAR certified capacity at the DOE test condition is 36.33 pints per day. Both numbers are true. They are 3.1 times apart. If you are comparing that unit against a 50-pint portable on the strength of the 113, you have compared two things that were never measured the same way.
How to size without a spreadsheet
- Damp smell, no visible moisture, under about 1,500 sq ft - 30 to 32 DOE pints. Around 318 W.
- Damp to the touch, occasional musty smell, or over 1,500 sq ft - 50 DOE pints. Around 488 W.
- Standing water, sweating walls, or a space that has flooded - 50 DOE pints minimum, plus continuous drainage, and fix the water source. A dehumidifier is not a waterproofing system.
- Below about 41F - a compressor unit ices its coil and its output collapses. That is desiccant territory. Desiccant versus compressor.
Square-footage claims on listings are close to useless as a sizing input. In our registry of 21 units, 50-pint machines claim coverage anywhere from 4,000 to 7,500 square feet - a 1.9x spread for the same certified capacity. The pint rating is a measurement.
