What the pint number on a dehumidifier actually means

A 70-pint machine from 2018 and a 50-pint machine from 2026 are broadly the same appliance. Nothing about the hardware changed. The test did.

The short answer

A dehumidifier's pint rating is the water it removes in 24 hours under a fixed laboratory condition. Since June 2019 that condition has been 65F and 60% relative humidity; before it was 80F. Cooler air holds less water, so the same machine now reports a number roughly 25 to 30 percent smaller.

Whole-home units lost proportionally less because they were already tested closer to their real operating condition.

That mapping is ENERGY STAR's, not ours. It is the official approximate correlation between the two procedures, and it is the single most useful thing to know before reading any dehumidifier advice written before about 2021.

Why the test changed

The old 80F condition described a warm, humid living room. Almost no dehumidifier lives in one. They live in basements, and a basement in July sits nearer 65F. Rating a machine at a temperature well above where it operates produced a number that flattered every product on the market equally, which made comparisons between them fine and made the absolute figure misleading.

ENERGY STAR's own wording is direct about it: the new procedure specifies that portable dehumidifiers are tested at 65F rather than 80F to more accurately reflect expected performance in a basement setting, and that the 15F reduction in test temperature means a dehumidifier tested to the new procedure will likely report a smaller capacity than when tested to the old one. The standards took effect in June 2019 and the relabeled products reached shelves in early 2020.

The third number, which is the one to distrust

There is a further figure in wide circulation that is not a DOE rating at all: capacity at saturation, usually quoted at 95F and 90% relative humidity. It is a legitimate measurement of a legitimate condition - the one a restoration contractor cares about after a flood - and it is legal to print on a consumer listing.

It is also a much bigger number, and it is where the real confusion in this category now lives. Examples from our own registry, all read off live listings on 2026-09-01:

Every figure in both columns is the manufacturer's own. Neither is false. They measure different conditions, and only one of them is comparable across brands.

Note what the hOmeLabs listings do, because it is the right behavior: they print both numbers and label the condition on the larger one. That is disclosure. The problem case is a listing that prints only the saturation figure, which is what most of the crawl space and commercial class does.

How to read any listing in five seconds

  1. 1Find the pint number and look for a temperature next to it. If it says 95F or 90% RH, that is a saturation rating and it is not comparable to a DOE one.
  2. 2Check for an ENERGY STAR badge. Certified units have a published DOE capacity and IEF in the government's own product list, which means the figure has been verified rather than asserted.
  3. 3Ignore the square footage entirely. In our registry, 50-pint machines claim 4,000 to 7,500 sq ft - a 1.9x spread for identical certified capacity.
  4. 4If the listing mentions a pre-2020 equivalent, take it seriously. Honeywell's TP70 listing says 50 pints, 70 pint under the 2012 DOE standard. A maker that volunteers that is telling you it expects to be read carefully.

What this means for what you buy

Practically, three things. If someone recommends a 70-pint dehumidifier, they mean today's 50-pint - buy that, not a modern 70-pint saturation-rated unit that is really a 50. If you are replacing an old machine, look up its old rating in the table above rather than matching the number. And if you are comparing a crawl space unit against a portable, convert to the DOE scale first or you are comparing nothing.

Questions

When exactly did dehumidifier pint ratings change?
The DOE's new energy conservation standards took effect in June 2019, and ENERGY STAR notes that from early 2020 buyers would see dehumidifiers that look comparable to previous models but carry lower capacity ratings.
Is a 50-pint dehumidifier today the same as a 70-pint before?
Broadly yes. ENERGY STAR's published correlation maps an old 70 to a new 40-45 and an old 90 to a new 55; manufacturers themselves most often pair 70 with 50. Honeywell's own listing prints exactly that pairing.
Why does my dehumidifier not collect its rated pints?
Because the rating assumes 65F and 60% RH. A cooler or drier room yields less water, which is correct behavior. If the room is genuinely warm and humid and it still collects nothing, see not collecting water.
What does 113 pints mean on a crawl space dehumidifier?
It is a saturation rating measured at 95F and 90% RH. The same AlorAir unit is certified at 36.33 pints per day under the DOE procedure - a factor of 3.1 between the two figures.
