Running it for less

Ranked by what they save rather than by how often they get repeated. The top one is worth more than the other five combined, and it is not a setting.

The short answer

The biggest saving by a wide margin is running a correctly sized unit, because an undersized one never reaches its target and runs at full draw permanently. After that: a realistic humidity target, sealing the space, a clean filter, and using a schedule if you are on a time-of-use tariff.

1. Size it correctly. This is most of it.

An undersized dehumidifier does not run at a reduced load. It runs continuously, at full draw, and never gets there. A 30-pint unit at 318 W running 24 hours costs $42 a month; a correctly sized 50-pint unit at 488 W running 12 hours costs $32.24. The smaller machine costs more and leaves the room damp.

That single comparison outweighs every other item on this page. If you take one thing from it, take that. Sizing.

2. Set 50%, not 40%

The last ten percentage points of relative humidity are disproportionately expensive: the drier the air, the less water there is to condense per unit of energy spent chilling the coil. Holding 40% costs substantially more run time than holding 50%.

And 50% is inside the range the EPA recommends anyway - below 60 percent, ideally 30 to 50. There is no health or mold argument for going lower in ordinary living space. Storage rooms and post-flood drying are different cases. Ideal humidity settings.

3. Seal the space

This is free and it is the biggest lever most people have not pulled. A basement window left open through a humid August, a garage door with a failed bottom seal, an unsealed crawl space hatch - each admits humid outside air faster than the machine removes water from it, and the unit simply runs longer to no purpose.

In a crawl space this goes further: an unsealed, bare-earth crawl space supplies moisture continuously from the ground, and no capacity of dehumidifier will win. Vapor barrier first. Crawl spaces.

4. Clean the filter

A clogged filter starves the coil of airflow. The machine keeps drawing its full power, moves less air, condenses less water, and in bad cases ices the coil - at which point it spends its time defrosting instead of dehumidifying. Efficiency collapses without the wattage falling at all.

Monthly in a garage or workshop, seasonally elsewhere. Most are washable. Cleaning and maintenance.

5. Use a schedule, if you are on a time-of-use tariff

On a flat rate, timing changes nothing - a kilowatt-hour costs the same at 3am as at 3pm. On a time-of-use plan the off-peak rate can be substantially lower, and a machine that can be scheduled from an app can do most of its work then. Several of the smart models here do this, and it is one of the few genuinely useful smart features in the category.

The caveat: do not shift so much running to off-peak that the humidity climbs badly in between. A humidistat holding a steady 50% is doing less total work than one recovering from 65% every afternoon.

6. Buy on IEF, weighted by your rate

Within the 50-pint class, certified IEF runs 2.01 to 2.20 - about a nine percent efficiency spread, or roughly $2.60 a month at twelve hours a day and the US average rate. In Nevada that is not worth paying much for. In Hawaii, where the same machine costs $92 a month, the same nine percent is $8.40 and repays quickly. Rates by state.

Three things that do not help

  • Turning it off at night. On a humidistat it already switches itself off at target. Turning it off manually lets humidity climb back and it works harder in the morning to recover.
  • Running it on low fan speed to save power. The fan is a small fraction of the total; the compressor dominates and is either on or off. Low fan speed mostly reduces noise and extraction, not consumption.
  • Emptying the bucket more often. It changes nothing about the energy used. It only changes how often the machine is switched off waiting for you.

Questions

What humidity setting is most economical?
Around 50%. It is inside the EPA's recommended band and materially cheaper to hold than 40%, because drier air yields less water per unit of energy spent.
Does running a dehumidifier on low fan speed save electricity?
Barely. The compressor dominates the draw and it is either running or not. Low fan speed mainly reduces noise and extraction rate.
Is it cheaper to run a dehumidifier continuously or intermittently?
On a humidistat there is no difference to manage - the machine already runs only when the room is above target. Manually cycling it usually costs more, because the room drifts up and has to be pulled back down.
Will a dehumidifier reduce my air conditioning bill?
It can let you set the thermostat higher, because drier air feels cooler. It also adds its own heat to the room. Whether it nets out depends on the space, and we are not going to put a number on it without measuring.
