AlorAir Sentinel HD35P Wi-Fi

Three numbers, and the one that is missing

This machine is sold as a 70-pint dehumidifier. AlorAir, to its credit, does not leave it there - the same listing bullet volunteers 35 pints/day AHAM, 70 pints saturation. Two figures for one machine, both from the manufacturer, and printing the smaller one alongside the larger is more disclosure than most of this category offers.

There is a third scale, and it is the one that lets you compare this machine against anything else on this site. The post-2019 DOE test condition - 65F and 60% relative humidity - is what the ENERGY STAR certified file records, and the Sentinel HD35P is not in it.

We can put a bound on it, though, because AlorAir certifies other machines it calls 35s. The Helios D35 is in the file at 24.00 DOE pints. The Sentinel Pro35X is in the file at 21.27. So on the scale that compares, an AlorAir "35" is a low-twenties machine - and this unit's 70-pint headline describes the same hardware class.

No certified entry also means no running cost

This is the practical consequence, and it is the reason the missing figure matters more than it sounds. Every wattage on this site is either printed by the manufacturer or computed from a certified capacity and efficiency pair. AlorAir publishes no wattage for the HD35P and the certified file has no entry for it, so there is no honest way to tell you what it costs to run. That is not us being precious - it is that the two inputs both genuinely do not exist.

Compare that with the cheaper unit in the picks below. The Helios D35 appears in the certified file under exactly the string on its listing, at 24.00 pints and IEF 1.95, which computes to 243 W and 274 kWh a year. You can check that yourself in under a minute, and then work out your own bill from it.

Treat that as the neighborhood rather than this machine's number. The HD35P is a similar-sized unit with a pump and a radio added, both of which draw something, and we are not going to invent the difference. How we compute every wattage.

What you are actually paying for: the radio

Strip the marketing back and the AlorAir crawl space line is a ladder with two rungs of hardware and one of connectivity. Here is the whole of it, as the listings describe it:

Read that table as a buyer and the decision gets simple. If the drain is below the machine and you will physically check on it, the Helios D35 does the same floor area for less, and it comes with a real efficiency figure attached. If the water has to go uphill but you do not need alerts, AlorAir sells a pump model without the radio. The HD35P is for the case where you want both - and specifically the alerts.

In a crawl space, the alert is the feature

It is easy to be cynical about a connected dehumidifier, and in a kitchen we would be. A crawl space is the exception, and the reason is that every failure mode down there is silent.

A crawl space dehumidifier runs unattended in a place you enter maybe twice a year, on your stomach. If the pump gives up, or the hose kinks, or the breaker trips, nothing tells you. The humidity climbs back to whatever the ground under your house wants it to be, and the first symptom is the thing you bought the machine to prevent. AlorAir's listing describes the app as live humidity, settings and operation status from anywhere - which is exactly the information that is otherwise unavailable without a flashlight and coveralls.

We have not installed the app, tested an alert, or checked what it does when the Wi-Fi drops - and a crawl space is not famous for signal strength. That last point is worth thinking about before you buy on this feature: the machine is under a floor, often behind a masonry wall, and AlorAir does not state a range. The wider connected field.

Two things AlorAir publishes that almost nobody does

• A pump reach. 19.6 feet of lift, with a 19.6 ft hose in the box. Most pump makers state nothing at all - Frigidaire, Hisense and hOmeLabs all decline to - and a pump you are buying for reach is a strange thing to buy on faith. How far will the pump actually push it.
• A six-year limited warranty, first two years full coverage. That is the longest term of anything we track, in a category where one year is normal and the fault that ends these machines cannot be repaired by an owner at any price. Repair or replace.

And one it does not publish here, which is odd: a noise figure. The cheaper Helios D35 states operation below 52 dB on its own listing. The HD35P states nothing. Same brand, same catalog, one model discloses and the other does not.

A 35-pint AHAM unit plausibly sits in that 221-344 W range, but the listing gives no figure and we are not going to invent the placement.

What is good

Who it is for

Someone whose damp problem is under the floor, who wants a pump that commits to a number and an app that tells them the machine is still running.

Skip it if

Skip it if the space is a normal basement you walk into. You would be paying a crawl-space premium and a Wi-Fi premium for less certified capacity than a 50-pint portable.

What is good

What is not

• -No pump - gravity drainage only, so the drain has to be below the machine

Who it is for

Someone with a crawl space or small basement, a drain at or below floor level, and no interest in paying for connectivity they will not use.

Skip it if

Skip it if the water has to go uphill, or if the whole point is being told remotely that the machine stopped. Those are the two things this model deliberately does not do.

Not published, and the HDi65S does not appear by name in the ENERGY STAR certified list - AlorAir's certified entries are the Sentinel HD55S (344 W), the Helios D35 (243 W) and the Sentinel Pro35X (221 W). Given the HD55S computes to 344 W at 36 DOE pints, a genuinely larger AlorAir unit sits above that. We are not going to put a figure on it without a source.

What is good

• +Condensate pump built in, so the discharge can go up and out rather than down and nowhere
• +Compact enough for low-clearance crawl spaces and joist bays
• +Auto defrost, MERV-1 filter, cETL listed
• +Optional remote monitoring, which matters for a machine nobody looks at

What is not

• -No published wattage and no named ENERGY STAR entry
• -The 120-pint headline is a saturation number, as with every unit in this class
• -Expensive relative to a portable of comparable DOE capacity

Who it is for

Encapsulated crawl spaces and sub-floor voids with no gravity drain, where the alternative is a bucket nobody will ever empty.

Skip it if

Skip it if you have a floor drain below the unit. The HD55 does the same job on gravity for less, and has a certified efficiency figure this one lacks.

The same specification, under three different brand names

One more thing the certified file shows, and it is worth knowing before you pay a premium for the badge. AlorAir's certified Sentinel HD55S is recorded at 36.33 pints a day, IEF 2.08 and 379 kWh a year. So are two other brands, to the decimal place:

That does not make AlorAir a bad buy. It makes the badge a smaller part of what you are paying for than it looks, and it means brand loyalty in this corner of the category is worth less than a specification sheet. Who should buy something else

• Anyone whose drain is below the machine and who does not want alerts. The Helios D35 covers the same 1,000 sq ft, is certified, publishes a noise figure and costs less. Buying the HD35P instead is paying for two features you just said you did not need.
• Anyone with a bigger crawl space. 1,000 sq ft is the stated limit. The HD55 states 1,200 and the HDi65S 1,300, both on the same six-year warranty.
• Anyone who needs a running-cost figure before buying. There is not one for this model and there cannot be, because it is not certified.
• Anyone drying an ordinary basement you walk into. A certified 50-pint portable removes roughly twice the water for less money, and you can look up its rating. The best 50 pint dehumidifiers.
• Anyone whose crawl space has no usable Wi-Fi. The feature you are paying for stops existing, and AlorAir states no range.

What we did not do

We have not run this unit, measured extraction, timed the pump, used the app or put a meter on it.
