Hisense dehumidifier error codes

Two Hisense manuals, two different models, and the same answer in both: if a code appears, phone us. That is the whole of what the manufacturer publishes, so this page is about what you can establish without it.

The short answer

Hisense does not publish the meaning of any dehumidifier error code. Two of its own use and care manuals say only that the unit will keep running and to contact customer service. So no honest source decodes E9, the answers circulating online contradict each other, and the practical move is elimination plus the warranty - Hisense covers parts and labor for two years.

What Hisense actually publishes

We went looking for a Hisense code table of the kind Frigidaire publishes. There is not one. Here is every statement about codes we could find in a Hisense document, quoted exactly:

Every reference to error codes in the Hisense manuals we could retrieve
DocumentWhat it says about codes
Hisense DH-35K1SJE5 Use & Care Manual"If the dehumidifier displays trouble code, the unit will still work. But please contact the customer service."
Hisense DH5019K1G Use & Care Manual"If the dehumidifier displays an error code, please contact Hisense customer service."
Hisense USA product support pagesNo code list. Document downloads and a contact route, nothing that decodes a display string.
Hisense USA Limited Warranty documentNo codes. It does set the warranty term, which turns out to be the useful part - see below.

For contrast, Frigidaire publishes eleven, grouped into five faults, with a recommended action for each. Frigidaire dehumidifier error codes.

Why you cannot trust what the search results tell you about E9

"Hisense dehumidifier E9" is searched around a thousand times a month in the US, which means a lot of people are standing in front of a machine showing a code nobody will explain. That demand has been met, and it has been met badly.

The pages that rank for it give two different answers. One says E9 means the water tank is full. The other says E9 means the control board has lost communication with the humidity sensor. Those are not variations on a theme - one is a two-minute fix and the other is a board or sensor failure. Neither page cites a Hisense document, because there is not one to cite.

So this page will not tell you what E9 means. We do not know. What we can do is give you a sequence that works without knowing.

Diagnosis by elimination, in order

Every step below tests something specific and costs nothing. Work down the list and stop when the behavior changes. The point is not to decode the display - it is to rule out each of the things that a code on a machine like this could plausibly represent.

  1. 1Note whether the machine is still running. Hisense's own manual says that with a trouble code displayed "the unit will still work". If yours has stopped dead, you are not looking at the condition that manual sentence describes, and that is a genuine piece of information before you touch anything.
  2. 2Check the bucket indicator, separately from the code. If the bucket light is on, treat it as a bucket problem first: empty it, reseat it until it sits square, and give the machine a few seconds to register. A bucket that is seated a few millimeters proud reads as full.
  3. 3Look at the float. The float is the part that tells the machine the bucket is full. If it is jammed, gummed or sitting crooked, the machine believes a full bucket regardless of what is in it. This is the single most common non-fault in the category.
  4. 4Wash the filter. A clogged filter starves the coil of airflow, which causes icing, which causes protective shutdowns. It is free, it takes five minutes, and it resolves a surprising share of everything. Cleaning and maintenance.
  5. 5Check the room temperature against the machine's floor. Hisense states operation down to 38F on its current pump model. In a room below that, a compressor unit ices faster than it can defrost and behaves like a fault. Dehumidifiers for a cold room.
  6. 6If it is a pump model, check the drain route end to end. A sag in the hose holds water, a kinked line stops the pump, and either looks like an electrical fault from the front panel. The drain has stopped working.
  7. 7Unplug it for a few minutes, then plug it back in. Not folklore - a genuine power cycle clears a latched protective state on most control boards. If the code returns immediately with a clean filter, an empty bucket and a room in range, you have eliminated everything an owner can eliminate.

Two of the seven steps above are free, take five minutes, and account for a large share of apparent faults.

What the code being undecodable actually costs you

Less than it feels like, and it is worth being clear about why. On a portable dehumidifier there are really only two categories of fault: the ones an owner can clear, and the ones that need the sealed refrigeration system opened.

The list above covers the first category completely. There is nothing in an owner-serviceable fault that a code would tell you and the sequence would not. And the second category cannot be acted on by an owner at any price - opening a sealed refrigerant circuit requires recovery equipment and EPA Section 608 certification, so knowing the exact code would not change what you can do about it.

Which means the code matters in exactly one situation: telling a technician what the machine is reporting. And that brings you to the part of the Hisense documentation that is genuinely, unusually good.

The warranty is the answer Hisense does publish

2 years, parts and labor

Hisense's stated dehumidifier warranty term, where most of this category gives one year

From Hisense USA's Limited Warranty for Portable Air Conditioners and Dehumidifiers, warranty periods section: "Air Conditioners & Dehumidifiers: Two (2) years for parts and labor", calculated from the date of original purchase. Retrieved 2026-09-22.

Read the two facts together and the strategy is obvious. Hisense will not tell you what the code means, but Hisense will fix or replace the machine for twice as long as most of its competitors. The manual saying "contact the customer service" is not a brush-off if the call is free for two years - it is the manufacturer routing you to the only party who can act on the code anyway.

One detail in that document to know before you call: the stated remedy is that Hisense will, at its sole discretion, provide a like-new or refurbished product of similar or better quality. That is a replacement promise rather than a repair promise. For a sealed-system fault it is arguably the better outcome, but it does mean the machine you get back may not be the machine you sent.

The warranty document also states what you need to have ready: proof of purchase, in the form of an original bill of sale or receipted invoice with a legible date, is required to obtain service. The contact routes it lists are the Hisense Consumer Care Center on 1-877-465-3566, service@hisense-usa.com, or hisense-usa.com.

If it is out of warranty

Then the code matters less again, because the decision collapses to one question: is the fault in the sealed system or not? If the elimination sequence above has not cleared it and the machine has stopped collecting water while the fan still runs normally, that points at the sealed system, and on a portable at this price the labor alone approaches replacement cost.

Repair or replace a dehumidifier walks the arithmetic properly, including the part most people get wrong: replacing a working machine to save energy does not pay back, because the entire certified 50-pint class sits within about sixteen dollars a year of itself.

How Hisense compares on disclosure

This site tracks what manufacturers will and will not put in writing, because in this category that varies far more than the machines do. On codes specifically, Hisense is at the unhelpful end and Frigidaire is at the useful end:

Published code documentation, by brand
BrandPublishes a code table?Where
FrigidaireYes - eleven codes, five fault groups, an action for eachOwner Center error code guide, plus the use and care manual
HisenseNo - "contact customer service" in both manuals we retrievedNothing found

Frigidaire's two documents do not fully agree with each other about one code, which we also published rather than smoothing over. Frigidaire dehumidifier error codes.

It is worth holding both facts about Hisense at once. It discloses less than Frigidaire about faults, and it commits to more than Frigidaire about fixing them - two years parts and labor against the category's usual one. The brand guide sets out who publishes what across the whole category, and the Hisense 50-pint reference covers the machine itself.

What we did not do

We did not decode E9. We did not reproduce a code table from a page that has no source, and we did not publish a plausible-sounding meaning because the search demand exists. Everything above is either quoted from a Hisense document with the model named, or clearly labeled as our inference from one. Where the manufacturer publishes nothing, this page says so - which is the actual answer to the question, even though it is not the answer anybody wants. How we work.

FAQ

Questions

What does E9 mean on a Hisense dehumidifier?
Hisense does not say. Both use and care manuals we retrieved state only that a trouble code means you should contact customer service, and no Hisense document we could find decodes any display string. The two answers circulating online - bucket full, and a humidity sensor communication fault - contradict each other and neither cites a Hisense source. Work through the elimination sequence on this page, then call Hisense, which covers parts and labor for two years.
Can I reset a Hisense dehumidifier error code?
You can try a power cycle: unplug it for a few minutes and plug it back in, which clears a latched protective state on most control boards. Do it after emptying the bucket, washing the filter and checking the float, so that if the code returns you have eliminated the owner-serviceable causes.
Will a Hisense dehumidifier keep working with an error code showing?
Hisense's DH-35K1SJE5 manual says it will - "If the dehumidifier displays trouble code, the unit will still work." If yours has stopped completely, that is different from the condition the manual describes and is worth mentioning when you call.
Is a Hisense dehumidifier error code covered by warranty?
Hisense states two years parts and labor from the date of original purchase for dehumidifiers, which is twice the category norm. You need proof of purchase with a legible date. Note that the remedy Hisense commits to is a like-new or refurbished replacement at its discretion rather than a repair of your unit.
Why does my Hisense dehumidifier show a code when the bucket is empty?
The likeliest owner-serviceable cause is the float rather than the water - if it is jammed or the bucket is seated slightly proud, the machine reads a full bucket regardless of what is in it. Check the float and reseat the bucket squarely before assuming an electronic fault.
Which dehumidifier brands publish their error codes?
Of the brands we track, Frigidaire does - eleven codes across five fault groups with a recommended action for each. Hisense does not. That difference is worth knowing before you buy, though it matters less than it sounds, because most codes point at faults an owner cannot act on anyway.
